Professor Mustafa BERKTAŞ

Rector of İzmir Bakırçay University

Mustafa Berktaş was born in 1960 in Izmir. He graduated from Istanbul Medical Faculty of Istanbul University in 1983. After he graduated he worked as a doctor in Tokat, Afyonkarahisar and Izmir. He specialized in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at Gaziantep University Faculty of Medicine. He served as the founding Head of Department of the Faculty of Medicine at Yüzüncü Yıl University and the founding chief of medicine of the University Health Research and Application Hospital in 1993. He also successfully served as the President of the Regional Medical Chamber of Van. He earned his Associate Professorship in 1996 and Professorship in 2003 at the same university.
In 2010, he set up Van Regional Training and Research Hospital in only 7 months where he was appointed as the founding chief of medicine. This hospital was the only health institution standing during the Van Earthquake in 2011 which successfully met the emergency health needs of the region. After his retirement in 2012 he worked as a manager in a private health institution for three years.
In June 2015, he was appointed as the Head of Turkish Health Care Quality and Accreditation Institute, which is embodied in Turkey Institutes of Health Administration. During his presidency, he and his team established the National Hospital Accreditation Program. This program was the first accreditation program that was put into practice in the Turkish health system.
In February 2017, he was appointed as a professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Health Sciences where he served as the Head of Department, Vice Rector responsible for Education, Quality and Scientific Research and the head of the Scientific Research Projects Commission.
Prof.Berktaş was appointed as the founding rector of Izmir Bakırçay University at the end of August 2017, by the proposal of Council of Higher Education and approval of the President.
In addition to the rectorship of İzmir Bakırçay University, Professor Berktaş also serves as a member of the Health Institutes Science Committee, a member of the Ministry of Health, Medical Specialization Committee and the Head of the Medical Health Sciences Education Council within the Council of Higher Education.
Professor Berktaş is fluent in English and has around 300 national and international publications. He is married with three children and four grandchildren.
